About this release
During the sixteenth century, Venice was the musical capital of Europe and the Basilica of San Marco — the private chapel of the Doge — the stage for its most celebrated performances. Il Cornetto del Doge sets out to evoke the wonder of travellers who gathered there to hear the great cornetto players of the time: Giovanni Bassano, Girolamo Dalla Casa, and the Gabrieli organists.
Canzon Seconda by Giovanni Gabrieli is recorded here on an instrument that has remained virtually unchanged since 1509: the organ of Paolo Pietro da Montefalco in Trevi.
