About
Extended Place is an independent record label founded in Rome in 2020 by pianist and producer Alessandro Stella. Brought to life just days before the first lockdown, it grew out of a lifelong fascination with recorded music and years spent making records for labels such as Artalinna, Continuo, Kha, Stradivarius and Warner Classics.
The label takes its name from the extended play, the format at the heart of its thinking. Stella conceives each release as a "concentrated" record: he lets the content decide the form and its duration. After repeated listening we all single out the tracks we love most — his aim is to make every EP a record of favourite tracks alone.
Each EP is conceived as a whole: the choice of pieces, their order, the silences between them, the cover — everything is meant to serve the experience of listening. Against every market logic, Extended Place still cares deeply about printing its records and about their graphic identity.
The catalogue unfolds in several series. EP is the heart of it — original projects spanning solo piano, chamber music, jazz and early music. EP Events gathers recordings born of special events, live performances and co-productions. EP Horizons is given to original music free of borders. EP Single — stories told in a single track. EP Echoes welcomes special titles from the past whose voice still echoes in the present.
The guiding image comes from the publisher Roberto Calasso: to think of each title in a catalogue as a chapter of one larger book. This, EP after EP, is what Extended Place sets out to build.
